Handwashing Reminders

As we transition into the fall and winter seasons, it's important for our students to remember the importance of practicing good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. These simple practices can significantly reduce the spread of germs, particularly during the upcoming holiday season when gatherings and travel increase.

Key Reminders:

  • Wash Hands Frequently: Encourage students to wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating, after using the restroom, and after blowing their nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Use Hand Sanitizer: When soap and water are not readily available, provide access to alcohol-based hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol content.
  • Cover Coughs and Sneezes: Remind students to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or their elbow when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues properly in a wastebasket and wash their hands.
  • Avoid Touching Face: Discourage students from touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

If you would like to celebrate your child's birthday at school, please check with the teacher to see what might be appropriate.  We do not distribute food treats for birthdays because of allergies.

November Is...

Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

Family Engagement Month

This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success.

FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.

Additionally, every school has a family liaison who will welcome and orient families, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development.

Please watch this video and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page for more information.

Technical support for using ParentVUE or completing the survey online is available by submitting a Parent Support Request ticket. Select SISParent in the Application dropdown menu and type Federal Impact Aid Survey under Issue Description. Or, call the Parent Technology Help Desk at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS).

Lost and Found

Please check the lost and found and reclaim your child's belongings.  Anything still here on November 26th (day before Thanksgiving break) will be donated. Consider putting your child's name or initials on the inside label of their sweater or jacket; staff members are then able to help return your child's belongings to them.

Message from Mrs. Durso

Oak Hill Wolf Pack,

Last Friday, we had a wonderful "This is Us Night" where our Oak Hill community came together to celebrate our cultures and traditions. It was a heartwarming evening filled with delicious food, vibrant performances, and a sense of belonging. Thank you to all the families who participated and made this event a success!

Next week, there is a adjusted schedule:

  • Monday, October 28th: 3-hour early release for teachers to engage in state-required EBLI training. We will start the day with our Pep Rally. We want all students to wear their PTA provided Wolf Pack t-shirt on this day. Students will be dismissed at 12:30 PM. Students requiring supervision (confirmed previously) will be dismissed at 3:30 PM.
  • Wednesday, October 30: Funky Monday - Monday Specials will run today to make up for no specials on Monday.
  • Thursday, October 31: 2-hour early release for the End of Quarter 1. All students are dismissed at 1:30 PM.
  • Friday, November 1: Student & Staff holiday for Diwali and Dia de los Muertos and All Saints Day. All schools and offices will be closed.

Kiss and Ride Safety

As the weather begins to cool down, we kindly remind everyone to follow our safety procedures at the kiss-and-ride area. Please be patient, maintain a safe distance, and follow the guidance of staff. Be aware and respect pedestrians and drive slowly. Your cooperation helps ensure the safety of all our students and staff.

Language Arts Grading Updates

Elementary Progress Report grades in English Language Arts may be impacted this year by our new curriculum, our new assessments, and the new 2024 ELA VDOE Standards of Learning. We now teach and assess all ELA standards in all quarters using rigorous on-grade level texts in relation to end of year expectations, which could result in lower grades earlier in the year as students work towards grade-level mastery. An update has been posted on the FCPS website:  https://www.fcps.edu/academics/grading-reporting/elementary-school/elementary-grading-and-reporting-handbook-parents#language-arts

In partnership,

Kelly Durso, Principal

Cali Loewenberg, Assistant Principal

Next Week's Schedule

Wednesday, October 30th - We will have MONDAY specials today.

Thursday, October 31st - TWO hour early release @ 1:30 pm for the end of 1st quarter.  We hope everyone enjoys Halloween, but we ask that no costumes be worn to school.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Friday, November 1st - No school (Diwali/All Saints Day)
Monday, November 4th - No school.  School Planning Day
Tuesday, November 5th - No school. Election Day.  Teacher Work Day

  • Diwali (Friday, Nov. 1):🪔 We wish a fun Diwali to all celebrating! Diwali is a festival of lights and one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs & some Buddhists. The festival represents the symbolic victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.
  • All Saints Day and Día de los Muertos (Friday, Nov. 1):This week we recognize those in our community observing All Saints Day and Día de los Muertos. For Catholics, All Saints Day (November 1) celebrates all those who are with God in Heaven, known and unknown. All Souls Day (November 2), known in Mexico and Latin America as Día de los Muertos, is a day of remembrance and prayer for all those who have died, especially for the souls who may be in purgatory. These special days are celebrated by Catholics, Anglicans, and some Protestants throughout the world.
Reminder: Please bring your ID

Please remember to bring your ID when you are coming to the school.  IDs are required in order to check in on our Visitor Management System.   This system is one of the security measures we have in place to protect your child.  It is also the system we use for tracking volunteer hours for FCPS.

Message from Mrs. Durso

Wolf Pack Community,

We are so grateful for their dedication to Oak Hill!

This School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. Also, new menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

Want to know what’s for breakfast or lunch? Nutrition Services now has printable menus.

Friday, October 18th- Awesome Sock Day! Let’s Sock-cessfully secure our digital footprints online!  We leave tracks when we travel online, so let’s rock awesome socks and wrap up Digital Citizenship week feeling fine!

Housekeeping
  • If your student normally rides a day care bus and you have changed their transportation for the day, please let the Oak Hill office know (703-467-3500, option 0) as well as letting the daycare center know.  This will help avoid confusion at dismissal as the daycare van drivers do not always get that information.
  • Lost and Found.  We already have a large collection of sweaters and sweatshirts in our lost and found.  Please look at the picture below and see if you see anything that belongs to your student!  As a reminder, if you put names or initials in jackets/sweatshirts, it greatly increases the chances that we can return your child's belongings to them.

FCPS News Social Studies Basal Resources Review

FCPS is adopting Social Studies Basal Resources for the 2025-26 school year. Basal resources are the primary resources used to support instruction in a given subject. Public review of the instructional materials under consideration — which is part of the process for selecting new resources — is underway. Visit the Community Review webpage for more information on how to view the materials online or in person.

All community feedback will be shared with School Board members before they vote to select materials in spring 2025. FCPS adopts basal resources by the process outlined in Regulation 3004.

The 2023-30 Strategic Plan — Goal 5: Leading for Tomorrow’s Innovation

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

Our final goal is Leading for Tomorrow’s Innovation. We are preparing our students for a future that has yet to be imagined. We must give them the skills they will need to succeed. Watch this video to see students exploring and preparing for careers through Career and Technical Experience programs. See how Goal 5 is being put into practice.
