Message from Mrs. Durso

Wolf Pack Family,

May has arrived sooner than we thought, and we are closing out the year strong! Last week, our second graders delivered a fantastic play celebrating friendship, individuality, and inclusion, complete with hilarious jokes. Over the weekend, eight of our talented sixth graders participated in the All County Chorus. Huge thanks to Ms. Peterson and Ms. Hood for their dedication to these students.

SOL testing begins next week. Our 3rd-6th grade students take the Reading SOL on Tuesday, May 7th. It's imperative that students get enough rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and get to school on time.

Next week is Staff Appreciation Week, and we're excited to celebrate our amazing team. Together with the PTA, we'll be showering our staff with extra love and appreciation. Any contribution you can make is welcome - consider you or your student writing a heartfelt note expressing how a staff member has impacted your child. Our staff works tirelessly every day to support our Wolf Pack students - we truly want them to feel the love next week.

In partnership,

Kelly Durso, Principal

Cali Loewenberg, Assistant Principal

P.S. We hope to see you at our Oak Hill Movie Night tomorrow (Thursday, 5/2) - Thank you, PTA!

Pictured are Oak Hill's Members of the All County Chorus with our music teachers, Wendy Peterson and Kelly Hood.  They performed on Saturday afternoon.  Congratulations on a great performance!

Class Placement Input

As the 2023-2024 school year is coming to a close, the Oak Hill staff is starting to prepare for the 2024-2025 school year. Class placement is one of the most important tasks that our staff engage in during the last weeks of school. In this process, we consider many things, such as heterogeneous groupings, balancing academic abilities, and maximizing the support our resource teachers can provide students.

If you feel that there is pertinent information to support your child’s success, please complete this optional Class Placement Input Form by Friday, May 17th. Please note that this system is not intended for families to request specific teachers. Your child’s current classroom teacher, specialists, counselors, and administrators will collaborate to make well-balanced classes. We value and consider your insight into your child’s learning needs.

Kindergarten Orientation - May 3rd

Please join us at our orientation for rising kindergarteners and their parents on Friday, May 3rd.  Doors open at 8:45.  Orientation is from 9-10 am.  Please enter at door 1 (front of school).  For registration questions, please contact Katherine Dillard at [email protected].

Wednesday, May 8, is the official Bike to School Day. Walk, Bike or Roll to school on May 8th!

Calendar Reminders Passover

Many Jewish communities in the United States celebrate Passover, a recognition of the deliverance of Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. Passover is also known as Pesah, Pesach, or the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Many Jewish families in the United States eat a ceremonial meal known as the Seder, which involves telling the story of the exodus from Egypt as well as eating various symbolic foods, such as meat of the paschal lamb and bitter herbs, recalling the harsh life of slavery. Chag Sameach to all in our community celebrating Passover!

Theravada New Year

In countries where Theravada Buddhism is the most dominant religion, New Year is celebrated for three days from the first full moon in April. Theravada means “the teachings of the elders.” Celebrations begin with people attending the local temple in the morning for chanting and meditation. In the afternoon they have a water festival in which they meet the Buddha image and pay respect to the elderly by watering their hands together. Building sandcastles is also one of the most popular activities during this day of celebration. New Year’s good wishes to our Theravada Buddhist community!

Message from Mrs. Durso

Wolf Pack Family,

This is a special Tuesday edition of the Wolf News!

Tomorrow, Wednesday, April 10, is an FCPS holiday and all schools and offices will be closed in observance of Eid-al-Fitr. In Islam, Eid-al-Fitr is a three day festival to mark the end of Ramadan. Muslims dress in new clothes, give charity, and pray in congregation. Eid is celebrated with the exchange of presents and delicious food with family and friends. Eid Mubarak to those in our Muslim community celebrating!

A huge thank you to the PTA, Mr. Mitchell, and our staff and students for an amazing opportunity to see the solar eclipse yesterday. When our students were outside, they also were able to see the beginning stages of our new playground construction. How exciting!

April is a month rich with cultural recognition, including Autism Acceptance Month, Month of the Military Child, School Library Month, National Arab American Heritage Month, and Muslim American Heritage Month. Please see below for more information about these important observances.

This week is Stress Less, Laugh More week. We're grateful to Ms. McCleskey for organizing this initiative, which includes visits from some adorable four-legged friends on campus.

Due to the weather prediction for Thursday and Friday, Field Days have been postponed to next week (Monday and Tuesday). Your child's teacher will be sharing an revised schedule.

We hope to see many of you on Friday Night for the Oak Hill vs. Lees Corner Basketball game! Also - see below for details on registering for the Oak Hill 5K in May!

We look forward to another fantastic week of learning together!

April is....

Month of the Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community, and recognize their strength and resilience. Learn more about Month of the Military Child and FCPS’ resources for military families.

National Arab American Heritage Month

FCPS is proud to celebrate National Arab American Heritage Month in April. This special month provides an opportunity to recognize the history and valuable contributions of Arab Americans. Arab Americans have ancestry in one of the world’s 22 Arab nations, which are located from northern Africa through western Asia. The people of these nations are ethnically, politically, and religiously diverse but share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

Muslim American Heritage Month

Muslim American Heritage Month is a time for celebrating the history, contributions, culture, and an enhanced understanding of the diverse population of Muslim Americans. View the Fairfax County School Board resolution honoring Muslim American Heritage Month.

School Library Month

In FCPS libraries, students develop knowledge and skills, experience a sense of belonging, find inspiration and support, and have the ability to freely pursue their personal interests and academic growth. Watch this video to learn how FCPS librarians make a difference.

Autism Acceptance Month

One in 44 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in the United States, according to the CDC. Our schools and staff play a vital role in creating and ensuring inclusive environments that accommodate and affirm autistic students.

Advertised Budget Focuses on Schools and Instruction

Investing in excellence means putting our dollars where it matters most — schools and instruction. Nearly 93% of FCPS full-time staff work directly in our schools. And nearly 86% of FCPS’ Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Advertised Budget is dedicated to instructional programs across all grade levels, including special education.

Only 5% of the advertised budget is for general support and central administration. Central office administrators represent only 0.8% of total full-time positions.

For more details on FCPS’ advertised budget, view budget documents, including the FY 2025 Budget Book.

Check out the Budget Calendar for important dates in the budget process as well as opportunities for the community to provide feedback.

Message from Mrs. Durso

Wolf Pack Family,

It was so amazing to welcome our wolves back in the building today after Spring Break! Our students were greeted with several new additions to our campus - including cafeteria tables, a brand new basketball court, and new wall art (courtesy of Ms. Linne)!

Home of the Wolf Pack!

Check out our cafeteria!

Oak Hill Learning Showcase

We hope to see many of you at our Oak Hill Learning Showcase on Thursday! Please see recent communications from our teachers (and lower in this edition of the Wolf News!) about this exciting event and how to RSVP.

Solar Eclipse ☀️  April 8

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders.

Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. At Oak Hill, we have been able to obtain approved eyewear so that students can safely view the eclipse ONLY while wearing the eyewear. Students who have returned permission slips will be able to go outside with their classroom to catch a glimpse of this amazing event. Students without permission will be able to view a live-stream of the eclipse when their class is outside. All Oak Hill students will be provided a pair of approved eyewear to remember this experience!

Here are some important reminders:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing.

Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. which coincides with dismissal, and ends around 4:32 p.m. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

We are so excited for another great week of learning!

Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools as part of their literacy instruction. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.Attend a virtual information night on Tuesday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m., to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom to support student growth. Participants will also get tips for supporting their students at home. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

In partnership,

Kelly Durso, Principal

Cali Loewenberg, Assistant Principal

Lexia Night

Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills.

Message from Mrs. Durso

Wolf Pack Family,

The week before Spring Break has been exciting!

Our students completed our Power of the Pack Challenge. During this challenge, classes were recognized for displaying excellent behavior across the school building. Every time a class earned 6 stickers, they earned a puzzle piece to decorate and display in the lobby. This collage below represents our community coming together united in the common goal of excellent behavior. We are so proud of our wolves for achieving our goal!

On Tuesday, we celebrated our students' success with a surprise Reptile World assembly. Mr. Michael (pictured below) educated our students about a variety of reptiles. Our students even had the opportunity to touch Banana Bread (not the food!) as they exited the assembly. You can tell by the pictures below how exciting this event was.

Mr. Michael shared that we were one of the best behaved and engaged audiences he had ever performed in front of! Way to go Wolves! Mr. Mitchell, our fabulous school counselor, spearheaded this initiative and assembly. Thank you Mr. Mitchell!

Tomorrow is March 21st. On 3/21 we recognize World Down Syndrome Day. Please consider wearing your most exciting socks in recognition of this day.

Next week is Spring Break - can you believe it?! When we return, we cannot wait to come together as the Oak Hill Wolf Pack to showcase some of the amazing learning that happens every day at Oak Hill. We hope you can join us at Oak Hill's Learning Showcase (5:00 -7:00 pm). There will be food available for purchase from 5:00-5:30 pm, then the showcase begins! Please RSVP on this google form by April 1st so we can get a good idea of the supplies and food needed. We will also be exhibiting selected student artwork that night.

If you haven't yet done so, please consider filling out the principal evaluation survey (more details below). Your input matters!

We hope that all of you have a relaxing and enjoyable Spring Break. Enjoy time with family and friends. We can't wait to see our wolves return on April 3rd.

In Partnership,

Kelly Durso, Principal

Cali Loewenberg, Assistant Principal

Lightspeed Classroom Management

As part of our commitment to creating a safe and focused learning environment for our students, our school is using a classroom management tool that will help teachers better connect with student devices during classes. We are continuing to expand our use over the coming weeks. This tool will provide teachers with a number of helpful features:

  • Easily view student screens in real time from the teacher console to see which students may need guidance or support.
  • Focus student attention on a particular website on their device to minimize distractions.
  • Pause student access to the internet to focus on other classroom tasks.

We believe this classroom management tool will allow us to maximize class time to support your student’s learning while at school. Please note that student devices will not be monitored outside of school hours. The regular filters remain in place on school devices, but once they are home, teachers cannot monitor students. As parents, we would like to encourage you to sign up for your own Lightspeed reports, which will allow you to see how your child is spending time on the computer during and after school hours.

🥁 Summer Camps and Learning Programs

Have you made summer plans for your child yet? Are you looking for a summer camp for your child with special needs?

The Family Resource Center has compiled information on summer camps including local options, camps for students with special needs (sorted by need), and camps for students experiencing grief or who have parents in the military.

Message from Mrs. Durso

Wolf Pack Family,

So much change has happened at Oak Hill this week! Our 5th Grade, 6th Grade, and Music Classes all completed their moves. It is so great to have the Pack all in the building! Thank you to our students for their amazing flexibility. Major kudos to our staff for how quickly they can make a brand new space feel like home!

It's Read Across America Week and our students have been enjoying extra fun reading activities. We've had guest readers, drop everything and read times, special reading places, and so much more. Also, we hope to see many of you at Multicultural Night this Friday! It's a great night celebrating the families of Oak Hill.

Monday, March 11 is the first full day of Ramadan. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. We want our Wolf Pack families and students to know that the library will be open during all lunches for students who may prefer to go to the library instead of the cafeteria, as many will be fasting. Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to fill out this Google Form regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation, silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction. We strive to make sure that every student feels valued and respected, and we will make every effort to assist your students with their specific needs.

You may have received a link to the FCPS Engagement Survey recently. FCPS is partnering with independent research firm K12 Insight to administer a Family Engagement Survey, which will be open from Sunday, March 3, to Friday, March 22. Your feedback is critical in helping FCPS to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs throughout the district. Need the link or more information? Check out this Family Engagement Survey informational site.

Looking forward to another great week!

Kelly Durso, Principal

Cali Loewenberg, Assistant Principal

National School Social Work Week

March 3-9 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.

Thank you to Oak Hill's wonderful social worker, Mrs. Cammy McCleskey, for all shedoes for students.

Ramadan

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

March 11 is an O day. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those day

A community conversation addressing the opioid crisis within Northern Virginia and Fairfax County Public Schools will be held Wednesday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Please enter through Door #14.

All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed is suitable for students in grades 6-12.
