Message from Mrs. Durso

Wolf Pack Family,

February has been a busy month at Oak Hill - and it's only half over! Check out all the amazing things we have been doing.

Black History Month

Throughout February, we celebrate Black History Month. Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS. Learn more about Black History month

101 Days of School

We are in the triple digits of school! This is a landmark day, especially for our kindergarten students. All year, they count the days of school to develop their number sense, conceptual understanding, 1-to-1 correspondence, and to lay the foundation for place value. We celebrated this special day with a dalmatian parade!

Our Kindergarteners celebrated the 101st day of school and dressed like the 101 Dalmatians!  So cute!!

Lunar New Year

We were able to celebrate the Lunar New Year with a Dragon Dance around the school. Thank you to the strong 6th grade students and our PTA who helped make this a great success!

The Lunar New Year is a holiday that marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar, which is the calendar traditionally used in many east Asian countries including China, Vietnam, Singapore, and South Korea. In these and other Asian countries, it is one of the most important holidays of the year. The Lunar New Year is all about ushering in luck and prosperity with family. Read more about Lunar New Year and its animal symbols in National Geographic Kids

Sixth graders, led by Mrs. Durso paraded the Dragon around the school to celebrate the Year of the Dragon!  Thank you so much to Mrs. Londal, our PTA treasurer, for transporting the dragon to us and for our Chinese teachers, Ms. Chen and Ms. Jiang for organizing.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday is a holy day of prayer and fasting in many Western Christian denominations. It marks the beginning of Lent, a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving leading up to Easter. Many Christians attend special Ash Wednesday church services, at which churchgoers receive ash on their foreheads. Ash Wednesday derives its name from this practice. Read more about Ash Wednesday in Britannica.com.

Spread the Love - Spirit Week!

We have been enjoying our spirit week and look forward to seeing what Thursday and Friday are going to bring!

Looking forward to another great week!

In Partnership,

Kelly Durso, Principal

Reminder: No School on 2/19

Monday, February 19th is President's Day.  Schools are closed for students and staff.

Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

Magnet Schools

Three FCPS elementary magnet schools provide programs that enhance learning in science, technology, and performing arts.

If you are interested in sending your student to an elementary magnet school program, consider attending a school-based information night at Hunters Woods Elementary School, Bailey’s Primary Elementary School, or Bailey’s Upper Elementary School

Information nights will provide an opportunity to learn about individual school programs, student eligibility, the lottery process, and transportation.

Registration for the 2024-25 elementary magnet lottery is open Tuesday, March 5, through Friday, April 12. Get more information about the schools, their programs, and locations.

Note about PlayDates

We love playdates, but becuase many of our buses are overcrowded, we are not able to send children home on buses other than their own, except in cases of emergency.  We ask that a parent picks up both children or that the playdate starts after students have arrived home.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Lunar New Year - Feb 10

Lunar New Year is one of the most important holidays among East and Southeast Asian cultures, including Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean communities, as well as many others.

It is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar, which begins on Feb 10, 2024 this year. The number of celebration days with different names varies depending on the country. China’s Lunar New Year is known as the Spring Festival, or Chūnjié in Mandarin, while Koreans call it Seollal and Vietnamese, Tết.

Lunar New Year is a celebration of community. During this time, families gather to eat feasts and practice cultural traditions.  Appropriate and welcomed greetings would be “Happy New Year!”  or “Wishing you health and prosperity in the New Year.”

🚍 Here Comes the Bus

Want to know if your child's bus is on schedule or where the bus is? Here Comes the Bus® is an easy-to-use website and app that enables parents to see the location of their child’s school bus — almost in real time — on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.

Parents can track multiple buses if their children don’t all ride the same bus; know exactly when children arrive at school or the bus stop; and receive customized text and/or email notifications about bus locations, schedule changes, or delays.

To get started, download the app from the Apple iOS or Android app store. Check out the Here Comes the Bus and Frequently Asked Questions webpages for more information.

Already using the Here Comes the Bus app? Send your feedback to [email protected].

Note: eNotify text messaging will continue to be used for reporting bus delays and bus incidents.

POG Buddy Day - 2nd Quarter

Growth is a foundational part of education, and FCPS believes that every student should have the opportunity to reflect on their yearly growth of Portrait of a Graduate skills. Portrait of a Graduate Presentations of Learning (POG POL) are an opportunity to reflect and create a portfolio of evidence where students share “I grew, I can prove it, and here’s why it matters.”  This can take a variety of forms such as a one-on-one or small group conversation, an exhibition (similar to science fair), or a formal student-led presentation with follow-up questions. This year at Oak Hill, all students K-6 are working on collecting evidence of their growth around Portrait of a Graduate Skills and will have a formal POG POL at the end of the year.  As part of the preparation and learning for this, students are all assigned a POG Buddy who they meet with each quarter to share their learning.  Last week we had our 2nd quarter POG Buddy Day and the halls and classrooms were a buzz with students sharing and talking about what they are growing in and the evidence they have to support it.

Message from Mrs. Durso

Wolf Pack Community,

Can you believe that February starts next week?! In February people all over the United States celebrate Black History Month - because Black history is American history. Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of Black and African American people year-round, and Black History Month is one opportunity to honor these diverse and important stories.

As we wrap up the 2nd quarter, we want to share our deepest appreciation for our Oak Hill staff, students, and families. We are excited to continue to see our students flourish as we enter this second half of the school year. Be sure to ask your student about their POG Buddy Reflection that happened this week.

Here are a few arrival and dismissal reminders:

  • Please do not use the townhouses (Tayloe Court) behind the school as a drop off/pickup spot for your child. This blocks the residents from access to their homes and driveways.
  • Arrive early, get to school on time!
  • Follow staff directions - they are there to protect our students!
  • Pull up as far as you can.
  • Be safe pulling away.

Thank you for your continuous support of Oak Hill. We appreciate all that you do!

In Partnership,

Kelly Durso, Principal

Cali Loewenberg, Assistant Principal

Playing and Learning with Snow!

Our preschoolers had fun with the snow!

End of Quarter Reminder

Thursday, January 25, is the last day of the quarter and a two-hour early release for students. Also, schools will be closed for students on Friday, January 26, for a teacher workday.
